Their was some people like ranting that you shouldn't buy a Dell due to the way they act. Personally I like Dells and I use one everyday at school but not only I use the ones at school that I use the ones at other places too and they don't seem to have any problems, but just a few errors that I only had experienced with them. Errors seem to be common in most Windows computers but not as often as we see them.
I had used many OptiPlexis at my school that some of them are almost ten years old, they may be slow but still runs good even with Windows 7 and didn't have any problems with them. I'm not saying anything bad about Dells and you should avoid them but in my opinion they are good computers.
They might had been some more issues with the consumer models had seen than the business models due to the compatibility issues. But if you think if you haven't had own a Dell, so don't think they are bad computers, just in your opinion I'm not saying that you should buy one if you think they are a bad computer maker. If I was going for a Dell then I should buy a business computer like a Latitude E6400 which I like the idea the way they build it is you can access the bottom panel via one screw unlike the other laptop designs out their that you have to take screw by screw which makes it easier to upgrade it.
In fact the hardware problems might relate to the one that I had on my HP Laptop and my Compaq desktop I had own for three years, every computer out there in this planet has a pros and cons. But I think the business ones aren't bad as the consumer ones. The thing I like about Dells they are reliable computers while the downside is that they could hardware problems, if I had hardware problems with my Dell then I would go to the site and get the updates to fix that problem which I always do with my computers anyway.
If you bad mouthing about Dell so much but remember that it might be just Windows but I don't know much about their support but if you just don't like Dell and they aren't going good for your future computing then don't buy one, go for a Toshiba, HP, other pre-made computer company, or build your own if your are enthusiastic to computers. Simple as that!
