There is several software I've tried to customize my computer and the software I use now is RocketDock which is a dock that you would see on a Mac, I use that to store my important programs in. Second is Rainmeter is the program is that you can customize your computer with gadgets or widgets and there is a lot of skins that you can get at Deviant Art. The third one is Stardock is one of the programs that organizes your icons and this one is not free, I got the one of the free old versions from one of my friend's blog posts.
I used to have flux which is one of the programs that I used on my laptop to converse battery and makes a nice warn background to it. Then I have tweakslogon which is a program that changes the logon background so and it's a helpful program if you don't like the default background on a pre-built computer, my ASUS comes with the company background instead of the default Windows 7 one.
I've heard about Start8 and is the program for anyone who don't like the metro screen in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, it costs like a few bucks but you can still get you old Windows experience like you would get in the previous versions. I could live without the start menu anyway.
I would normally get wallpapers from various sites too like Google, and HD wallpaper sites, etc. Also was thinking about getting icons too and I would use icon archive to get my icons from.
